Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer has been trending in India ever since its release on July 21. Apart from the glowing reviews and positive word-of-mouth, the film is also making headlines for a controversial intimate scene where the protagonist utters a shloka from the Hindu religious text, Bhagavad Gita. Now, Nitish Bharadwaj, the man known for playing the role of Lord Krishna in BR Chopra’s classic TV show Mahabharat, has expressed his views on the said scene.
For the unversed, it is believed that Lord Krishna recited the Gita for the first time to Arjuna on the battlefield before the commencement of the war of Kurukshetra in Mahabharata.
The said line recited in Oppenheimer, which goes like – I am become death, the destroyer of the universe – is inspired from a shloka in the Gita, which says, “I am mighty time, the source of destruction that comes forth to annihilate the worlds. Even without your participation, the warriors arrayed in the opposing army shall cease to exist.” Cillian Murphy, who plays Oppenheimer in the movie, recites this line while indulging in a sexual act with Florence Pugh’s character.
Talking to ETimes, Bharadwaj said that Krishna, in this shloka, says that “the eternal time who will kill everything; so everyone will die even if you don’t kill them. So, do your duty.”
Speaking about Oppenheimer’s intention and state of mind, Bharadwaj said, “When Oppenheimer created the atom bomb and it was used to kill most of Japan’s population, he was himself questioning whether he did his duty properly! His famous interview showed him in tears, which means that he had probably regretted his own invention. He probably saw that his invention will destroy the human race in future, and he was probably remorseful. The use of this verse in the film should also be understood from Oppenheimer’s emotional state of mind. A scientist thinks of his creation 24x7x365 days, irrespective of what he is doing. His mind space is consumed fully of his creation and the physical act is just a natural mechanical act.”
He added, “I appeal to (the) people to think of this emotional aspect of Oppenheimer’s important moments of life. Isn’t he proved correct that now we see all the explosive technologies killing our own race – for human greed of territorial & commercial superiority – without any sense of larger duty as an individual or a nation or a planet? The UN must enforce nuclear disarmament seriously. Nolan’s message is loud and clear!”
Coming to the box office, Oppenheimer has earned Rs 56 crores in its first four days in India.
