With his soulful voice, singer Arijit Singh has won millions of hearts. He often makes headlines for his tracks. However, a couple of months ago, Arijit courted controversy. Reportedly, it led to the cancellation of his concert in Kolkata. During the inauguration event of the Kolkata International Film Festival, in presence of West Bengal CM, Mamta Banerjee, Arijit sang a few lines of his popular song ‘Gerua’ in December 2022. Now, after almost two months, Arijit has finally broken his silence on the matter.
It all happened during his concert in Kolkata on February 19. The singer performed for almost four hours in Kolkata at his concert. While performing he also sang ‘Gerua’ from Dilwale. Addressing the controversy related to the song, he said, “So much controversy over a colour! Saffron is the colour of Sanyasis, of Swami Ji (Vivekananda). Had he worn white, would there be a controversy over the white colour as well?”
For the unversed, days after Arijit Singh sang Gerua, his concert, which was scheduled to be held on December 18, was cancelled. Later, it turned out to be a political slugfest between the opposition BJP and the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). Given that, the ‘Besharam Rang’ controversy was already making headlines at that time, Arijit Singh’s performance of ‘Rang De Tu Mohe Gerua‘ only added to that.
To clear the air for once and all, West Bengal Minister Firhad Hakim had said the permission for Arijit Singh’s concert was not granted as a G-20 event was also scheduled in the same area. Meanwhile, TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh had also refuted the charge that cancelling the singer’s event was a reaction to his performance of ‘Gerua’.
Coming back to Arijit Singh, the 35-year-old singer kick-started his tour, One-night Only-India Tour, back in November 2022 with its first show in Mumbai.
