Her midriff show sent many leading ladies of her time to the gym to work on their ‘curves’. Her oomph pretty much ended the producers need to cast another actress just for a bold number. Zeenat Aman was literally the only woman who could sizzle in ‘Laila O Laila’ in one scene, change into Indian wear right after, and become a demure, caring mother figure to a little girl. So here’s looking at some of her most iconic roles that make her the absolute trendsetter that she is.
1. It all began with this one song, ‘Dum Maaro Dum’ where she became the poster girl for India’s hippie culture in the 70’s. Bell-bottoms, straight hair, parted in the center, big glares, the beads; she wore them like no one else. This one song picturized on her turned out to be even bigger than the movie, some fans would say. And for the first time ever the hero’s sister became the most talked about character in a Hindi film.
2. By the time Roti Kapda Aur Makaan released in 1974, Zeenat had already been established as a leading lady who could essay roles that portrayed the young & carefree generation of her times. Her casting opposite Manoj Kumar in a movie which was more of a social commentary was an interesting one. While she had enough scenes to prove her acting chops, what she is most remembered for in this movie perhaps is her saree-clad figure dancing in the rains.
3. Over a period, it became very clear that Zeenat Aman was bold not just in her fashion choices but also when it came to her roles. Who else, at that time could have taken on the role of Nisha, a prostitute who doesn’t get into long drawn out emotional justifications for her profession. Even with a costar like Sanjeev Kumar, Zeenat held her own in Manoranjan.
4. Zeenat Aman worked with Big B in several films. As an onscreen couple, they looked uber stylish together and we just could not get enough of them after seeing their chemistry in the 1978 release Don. Heroines usually sported ‘boy cuts’ when their characters were pretending to be boys. But Zeenat’s bob just made her look sexier than ever.
5. When Feroz Khan decided to direct Zeenat in Qurbani, her sex appeal and style quotient simply exploded on screen. Daring bikini’s, shiney revealing gowns, sarees, Zeenat Aman became the undisputed style queen of her times with this movie.
Amongst other trends, she can also be credited to have single handedly made Indian wear naughty. But for all her on screen boldness, this queen has always been a very private person. Through all her professional link ups and personal controversies, she has remained stoically aloof and dignified. When you catch her at rare events, you realize that her bold beauty comes from deep within.
