The iconic French fashion house Saint Laurent is moving into cinema business with a new film production banner, set to be launched in Cannes with its first production!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Saint Laurent Productions will be led by house creative director Anthony Vaccarello. Saint Laurent’s new film production banner will launch in Cannes with its first production, Pedro Almodóvar’s Strange Way of Life. The short features Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal as two middle-aged gunslingers with a deep connection who meet up again after a 25-year separation.
All Saint Laurent Productions will feature costumes by Vaccarello. The luxury brand’s film production arm currently has two feature-length projects with David Cronenberg and Paolo Sorrentino in the works. “These directors never fail to open my mind and, in a way, the singular, radical vision they bring to cinema has made me the person I am today,” Vaccarello said.
Speaking with WWD, Vaccarello said Saint Laurent is a brand that has always been “linked to cinema.” He further mentioned that the new production label would offer a chance to broaden his creative vision for the brand. “For me, a film is something you can still see in 10, 20, 30 years if it’s a good film,” he told the outlet.
He added, “Communication-wise, doing a film has more impact on people than a collection. I’m very excited to extend that creativity into something broader and more popular.…It’s a new approach to maybe get new Saint Laurent customers.” According to WWD, which first reported the news, Saint Laurent Productions will serve as a co-producer on Cronenberg and Sorrentino’s projects.
