After an extensive two-year period of pre-production, Wonka has finally unveiled its highly anticipated first trailer exclusively at CinemaCon, revealing Timothée Chalamet’s take as the famed chocolatier Willy Wonka.
The new trailer follows Chalamet’s Wonka who hires Hugh Grant’s Oompa Loompa and showcases his singing skills during his quest for magical recipes. “Every good thing in this world started with a dream,” Wonka says in the trailer. “So, you hold onto yours.”
The whimsical trailer also revealed the first look at Olivia Colman as a Cockney innkeeper, Sally Hawkins as Wonka’s mother, and Calah Lane as Wonka’s new friend. Roald Dahl’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” tells the story of a young boy who wins a golden ticket to tour Willy Wonka’s renowned chocolate factory.
As Variety notes, since Wonka is an origin story focused on the famed chocolatier, the film does not feature Charlie and his companions, as it is set during the factory’s preparations for its grand opening. But in the extended footage that screened at the convention, he finally meets Hugh Grant’s Oompa Loompas trapped in a tiny glass jar.
Besides Chalamet, the film also stars Olivia Colman, Keegan-Michael Key, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Colin O’Brien, Matt Lucas, Simon Farnaby, Natasha Rothwell, Rufus Jones and more. Warner Bros. has described the prequel story as a “vivid, mythical beginnings of the imaginative young inventor before he becomes the renowned scrumdiddlyumptious Mozart of chocolate.”
Directed by Paul King, the musical is slated to hit theaters December 15, 2023.
