Karishma Tanna, who is a known face on TV and is currently promoting her upcoming series Scoop helmed by Hansal Mehta, said that she was out of work despite the success of Sanju. Helmed by Rajkumar Hirani, the biopic starred Ranbir Kapoor in the role of Sanjay Dutt. Tanna had a special appearance and was appreciated for her performance. However, none of the success of the movie brought her work for a year and she went into depression.
Karishma Tanna told Siddharth Kanan in Hindi, “I thought Sanju, despite the small role, will help me to move forward in life. But, in fact, nothing happened. After the film, whatever response, films or projects I had expected did not arrive. For good seven to eight months or 1 year, I wasn’t working.” She went on to say that it left her wondering what happened with her career when she was being called a promising actor by film critics.
“I had a lot of expectations from the industry that I will get work now (after Sanju). I don’t know, sometimes you get into the dark hole, (and think) what does life want? What do I do more to showcase my acting? Woh bahut hi main depressed phase mein chali gayi thi (I had entered a depressed phase). I thought my life is just colourless. I didn’t know what to do with my career. I was messaging people, saying ‘Have you seen Sanju? Did you like my acting?’ My mom is the only one with me. I didn’t feel like telling her because she would be stressed. My mom is sensitive. My friends wouldn’t understand because none are from the industry,” Karishma added.
She said, “I self-motivated myself. Only I know how I have pulled up myself from that phase.”
Meanwhile, Karishma Tanna headlines Hansal Mehta’s Scoop which showcases society’s rush to judgment as Jagruti, a headline-writing journalist is caught between the nexus of the police, the underworld, and the media. One single phone call sets off a chain of events. Inspired by real events and Jigna Vora’s memoir, ‘Behind Bars in Byculla: My Days in Prison’, the series is produced by Matchbox Shots and created by Hansal Mehta and Mrunmayee Lagoo Waikul. The genre-defining drama series is set to premiere on Netflix on June 2, 2023.
