The awards ceremony opened with a special orchestral performance of Robbie Robertson’s Oscar-nominated Killers of the Flower Moon score, set to scenes from the film. Guests in attendance included Sharon Stone, Fatih Akin, Killers of the Flower Moon Best Editing Academy Award nominee Thelma Schoonmaker, the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media of Germany, Karoline Herfurth, Sibel Kekilli, Maria Schrader, Martina Gedeck and Francesca Scorsese.

As reported by Variety, Scorsese talked about Berlinale in his speech and the impact of the festival on him as a filmmaker, specifically when Brian De Palma won the Silver Bear for Greetings. He said, “It was a very important event and it was a real turning point for all of us — for Brian, of course, and by extension all of us who were working low-budget in America at the time, particularly not in Hollywood. Low-budget, independent pictures were quite rare in America at the time, and it helped open the way for filmmakers like Jim McBride and Phil Kaufman, for myself. It gave a stature in a sense that the studios started to take us seriously … It paved the way for me meeting up with Bob De Niro and casting him in Mean Streets. And 10 years later, I would come to Berlin for the first time with Raging Bull, opening night 1980 and then back again with the Rolling Stones for ‘Shine a Light,’ and then again with The 50 Year Argument.”

“Watching each other’s pictures, complimenting each other, arguing with each other, going down our own paths. I mean, what else can one do when you become obsessed with an art form?” Scorsese added. “When you live it, when you have to be on your own. That’s the lonely part, but it’s so important to remember that, even though it’s lonely, that you’re part of a community. And that community of people is driven by an obsessive love with this art called cinema.”

“I really feel that I’ve been blessed to have taken part in that conversation for most of my life now,” he said in his speech. “And as for looking back on my work, I can’t … partly because I really do seem to keep wanting to make pictures. So maybe I’ll see you in a couple years, I hope with another one.”

Broadly hailed as a “masterpiece,” Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon was recently honoured with 10 Academy Award nominations, including nods for Best Picture, Best Director (Martin Scorsese), Best Actress in a Leading Role (Lily Gladstone), Best Supporting Actor (Robert De Niro), Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, Best Original Score, Best Original Song, Best Film Editing, and Best Cinematography. Additionally, George is the first member of the Osage Nation to be nominated for an Academy Award. Scorsese made history as he became the most-nominated living director, bringing his total to 10 lifetime Academy Award nominations for Best Director.

The film has been honoured as the Best Film of the Year by the National Board of Review, which named star Lily Gladstone as Best Actress, Martin Scorsese as Best Director, and Rodrigo Prieto for Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography, as well as being named to the American Film Institute’s list of Motion Pictures of the Year. Killers of the Flower Moon is an epic western crime saga, where real love crosses paths with unspeakable betrayal. Based on a true story and told through the improbable romance of Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Mollie Kyle (Lily Gladstone), “Killers of the Flower Moon” tracks the suspicious murders of members of the Osage Nation, who became some of the richest people in the world overnight after oil was discovered underneath their land. “Killers of the Flower Moon” also stars Robert De Niro and Jesse Plemons, and is directed by Academy Award winner Martin Scorsese from a screenplay by Eric Roth and Martin Scorsese, based on David Grann’s bestselling book.
