Director Kiran Rao has shown interest in watching Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s recently released film, Animal. In a recent interview with Lallantop, Rao acknowledged the film’s success and positive audience reception. It all started when she was talking about her recent directorial, Laapataa Ladies.
Kiran asserted, “Laapataa Ladies has gotten so much love, I am grateful. Even the critics have liked it. When the audience likes a film, it’s often not necessary the critics will. The audience likes action-packed, VFX-heavy films these days. Films like Animal.”
She further added, “I want to watch the film, it’s necessary. It has done so well because people have loved it. I’ve heard that Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s craft is really good. Ranbir (Kapoor) is also a good actor. It will be an interesting watch for me, people seem to love it.”
This comes after Kiran previously advocated for gender sensitivity in films during a 2023 session. Citing a Tata Institute of Social Sciences study (according to TOI), Rao highlighted stereotypical portrayals of women and LGBTQ+ characters on screen. She mentioned Kabir Singh as an example of a commercially successful film despite promoting stalking behaviour.
Sandeep Reddy Vanga responded to Kiran’s earlier comments in an interview with Dainik Bhaskar, referencing Aamir Khan’s 1990 film Dil and its controversial lyrics. This reignited discussions about an old apology from Aamir where he expressed regret for participating in films with poor female representation.
Kiran later clarified in a chat with The Quint that her comments on gender sensitivity weren’t directed at any specific films by Sandeep. She stated that she hasn’t seen his work and is not accountable for her ex-husband’s past films.
