EXCLUSIVE Park Seo Joon on rediscovering identity in playing dual roles; Han So Hee on grappling with aftermath of Najin parasite in Gyeongseong Creature Season 2 “The time leap to 2024…”

Park, who plays dual roles as Jang Ho Jae and Jang Tae Sang, shared insights into the unique challenge of embodying two characters that share a striking resemblance but exist in fundamentally different contexts. “Jang Ho Jae is basically Jang Tae Sang without his past memories. As a person who’s experiencing everything for the first time, and also someone living in the modern era, so like modern way of speaking, modern way of acting, was really important for Ho Jae,” he explained to Bollywood Hungama during a roundtable discussion on Wednesday, September 25. [Video will be out tomorrow].

Park Seo Joon emphasized the importance of portraying Ho Jae as someone rediscovering his identity. “Another key point was the process of him regaining or finding his past memories. So instead of kind of trying to make a distinction between the two, I looked at the whole picture,” he added.

Han So Hee returns as Yoon Chae Ok, delivering a powerful portrayal of survival and selflessness. In Season 1, Chae Ok is motivated by her quest to find her mother and protect Seishin. However, Season 2 presents new challenges as she grapples with the aftermath of being infected by the Najin parasite, a consequence of her mother’s sacrifice to save her. “In Season 1, Yoon Chae Ok wanted to find her mother and protect Seishin. That was her big motive. But now in season two, that’s all gone, and there’s this line that really tells who she is, which is, ‘what’s the scariest is you have to live without being able to die without having anyone by your side.’ I think that really sums up what this character, Chae Ok is in season two. Instead of living for her own desires and for her own self, she tries to live a more selfless life, helping others. I think that’s the backbone of Chae Ok’s story in season two,” Han remarked, whilst talking about navigating the emotional core of season 2.

The series dives deeper into the complexities of human desire and the consequences of ambition, with the narrative expanding from the struggles of 1945 Gyeongseong to the mysterious happenings in 2024 Seoul. The trailer hints at bizarre serial killings that seem to echo past traumas, raising the stakes for the characters as they navigate this modern chaos.

Director Chung Dong-yoon expressed his belief in the necessity of a multi-season arc. “During the inception stage of the show, I was talking with writer Kang Eun Kyung, and we thought that two seasons would do this story justice. Multi-season could be good news to a director, but it also could be very challenging, because you have to continue with that story in the second season, and there’s always the sophomore slump. You never know if the second season will do better than season one, but I love that there was a time leap to 2024. I thought of season two as a different show. So, we call it seasons one and two, but I approached it as two different narratives,” the director said.

The introduction of new characters like Kuroko Leader and Seung Jo adds more intrigue to the story. Kuroko Leader, portrayed by Lee Mu Saeng, has been conducting questionable experiments at Jeonseung Biotech. Meanwhile, Bae Hyeon Seong’s Seung-jo intensifies the suspense, pursuing Ho-jae and Chae-ok amidst the unfolding mysteries.

The intricate web of relationships and fate ties these characters together, blurring the lines between past and present. As Season 2 unfolds, the characters grapple with their intertwined fates.

Gyeonseong Creature season 2, with seven episodes, is now available on Netflix.
