Actor Ali Fazal is returning to his theatre roots, but this time in a different capacity. The actor has come on board as presenter for Mahanagar Jugnu, a play written and directed by Amitosh Nagpal. The production will be staged at the upcoming Le’ Chakallas Fringe Festival in Mumbai.

Unlike his usual on-stage appearances as a performer, Fazal’s role here is to support and back the production. Mahanagar Jugnu is positioned as a reflection on urban life, tracing its chaos, contradictions and quiet moments through a theatrical lens.Sharing his thoughts on presenting the play, Fazal said, “Theatre has always been my first love. It’s where I learned to listen and truly inhabit a character. Turning presenter for Mahanagar Jugnu feels like coming full circle.” He added that Nagpal’s writing carries an intimacy that resonates beyond the stage.
The play is part of Le’ Chakallas, a week-long fringe festival scheduled from February 25 to March 1 in Mumbai. The event brings together theatre, poetry, storytelling, stand-up, music performances, workshops and independent showcases under one banner. Among the line-up are formats like Dastangoi and Qiseebaazi, along with a stand-up set by Varun Grover, as well as book readings and interactive sessions. The festival is backed by Mandali Talkies in collaboration with Artisan Coterie, and aims to create a space where multiple art forms intersect over five days.
For Fazal, the move signals a renewed engagement with live performance, not as the face on stage this time, but as someone helping bring a story to audiences in a different way.
