Actor Taapsee Pannu has shared a strong opinion on the current state of unconventional cinema in India, saying films that do not follow mainstream commercial formulas are slowly disappearing. According to her, such movies are now at risk of becoming an “extinct species” because they are no longer being backed strongly by either theatres or digital platforms.

Speaking to PTI, Taapsee said that films like her upcoming project Assi are finding it increasingly difficult to survive in today’s market. She highlighted how the industry is moving towards safer and more predictable content, leaving less room for experimental or issue-driven stories. “We are on the verge of becoming an extinct species,” she said while referring to films like Assi.

The actor also addressed the common belief that OTT platforms provide a secure alternative for unconventional films. Taapsee stated that streaming services are also becoming selective, and they too are leaning towards content that already has commercial demand. She pointed out that OTT platforms often hesitate to take films that have not proven themselves at the box office. Taapsee further urged audiences to support meaningful cinema by watching such films in theatres instead of waiting for them to arrive on streaming platforms.

Meanwhile, Taapsee is gearing up for the release of her upcoming film Assi, directed by Anubhav Sinha. The courtroom drama is scheduled to hit theatres on February 20, 2026. The film also features actors including Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra, Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub, Supriya Pathak, Revathi, Kani Kusruti and Naseeruddin Shah.
