Earlier this year, Nikkhil Advani released his film Vedaa, featuring John Abraham, Sharvari, and Abhishek Banerjee in prominent roles. Despite generating considerable buzz, the movie fell short of box office expectations, largely due to its clash with Stree 2, starring Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao. The director discussed this in a recent interview.
He told PTI, “Vedaa released on August 15 and it hit us out, it gobbled us up. Four days later, somebody asked, ‘What I could’ve changed about Vedaa? I said, ‘I could’ve just changed that Stree 2 was not a good film.’ “I think I made a good film, my job is to tell the story that people have entrusted me to tell, as well as possible.”
“We made a very good film. It has certain things that make eyes wide open. People are saying in the second half there’s action, otherwise, it would’ve been an independent film about Dalit atrocities and rights. Stree 2 came, and it was incredible. I feel post lockdown and pandemic, the audience wants to be free, they want to enjoy freely,” Advani said when asked if he regretted the timing of the clash.
“I think Sharvari was incredible, John is superb in the film, and a lot of people worked hard on it. I feel bad for them, not so much for me,” Advani shared. He noted that his previous films, Batla House and D-Day, were also well-made but didn’t attract audiences to theaters.
In the box office clash that began this Independence Day, Abhishek Banerjee stood out as the real winner, featuring in both Vedaa and Stree 2. Speaking to News18, he reflected, “As an actor, it’s a bittersweet experience. Nikkhil Advani has crafted a beautiful film. I noticed 60% occupancy for Vedaa in metro cities, and people even clapped during the climax. The challenge is that Stree is a powerhouse. Being a sequel, audiences are already connected to its characters. No one anticipated Stree would become such a massive hit. I expected it to be big, but not Godzilla-level.”
