Bollywood actor Vikrant Massey is set to highlight a pivotal moment in India’s history with his upcoming film The Sabarmati Report. At the trailer launch event held on Wednesday in Mumbai, Massey described the tragic events surrounding the Godhra train burning in 2002 as “our 9/11.” The film, directed by Pradeep Sarkar and produced by Ektaa Kapoor, showcases Massey as a journalist determined to uncover the truth behind the horrific Sabarmati Express incident.
Massey spoke about the importance of the film, especially for a generation unaware of the events. He said, “This Sabarmati Express incident is our 9/11. Many people have covered and written about Godhra, but nobody knows about the Sabarmati Express incident.” He further credited producer Ektaa Kapoor for her unwavering support, noting, “Ektaa said hum sab box office ke nashe mein rehte hain, but I’ll make this film irrespective of the box office.” This will be Massey’s eighth collaboration with Kapoor, marking a journey that brought him from television to the big screen.
Ektaa Kapoor on the Film’s Social Relevance
Producer Ektaa Kapoor, a prominent figure in Indian entertainment, shared her perspective on The Sabarmati Report. She explained that the film resonates beyond just the facts of the Godhra incident, providing a social commentary on how India often distances itself from its own history and heritage. Kapoor remarked, “When the story was narrated to me, I knew I had to make this. Back in the day, in 2002, we as a country would run away from anything desi, our own language, and all things that are truly ours.” She added that the project holds personal importance because many young Indians today lack awareness of the incident.
A Long-Awaited Release
Initially slated for a May release, The Sabarmati Report faced delays, pushing its launch to August, and then finally to November. The makers have now confirmed that the film will be released in theatres on November 15, with hopes that it will encourage viewers to engage with a significant yet underrepresented chapter of India’s recent history.
