In their collective and individual career Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Chupke Chupke holds a special place for Sharmila Tagore and Dharmendra. Think Dharmendra. Think Sharmila Tagore. And the world thinks of their beloved comedy Chupke Chupke. Co-incidentally, both the legendary stars share the same birth date – December 8.
The two co-starred in a number of films in the 1960s and 1970s, some like Satyakam and Anupama are all time classics, others like Mere Humdam Mere Dost and Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka being enjoyable potboilers. The pair was supposed to come together in Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani last year, but Sharmila Tagore had to opt out for health reasons.
“Yes, that was unfortunate,” Sharmilaji said. “But that’s okay. We have done so many unforgettable films in the past. Yes, Chupke Chupke is by far our most popular film together. I still remember we had so much fun shooting this film, so much so that we never realized when it started and when it ended. It was like one big picnic. All of us, Dharam, Amitabh, Jaya, Om Prakashji, Usha Kironji, Asraniji… it was fun and such lovely songs by Burman Dada. Lataji’s ‘Abb ke sajan sawan mein’ became very popular.”
Dharmendra remembers Chupke Chupke as loads of fun. “Comedy has always been my favourite genre,” he said. “If you see in Sholay, I did quite a lot of comedy. The same year as Sholay, I did Pratigya, where in almost the entire film I was pretending to be a cop in a village. Hrishida’s Chupke Chupke is a favourite. Here too I was pretending to be someone I was not (a chauffeur). Working with Hrishida and Sharmila was always a memorable experience. We (Sharmilaji and Dharamji) haven’t met in ages. I hope she is doing well.”
In a conversation with Hrishikesh Mukherjee in the past, he discussed the popularity of Chupke Chupke. “Beta, it is all destiny,” he said. “You say Chupke Chupke is my most popular film. I think Golmaal is also very popular. Audiences enjoy a good laugh as much a good cry. I had done two very serious films Anupama and Satyakam with Dharam and Sharmila. So I decided to do a light-hearted film with the pair. Chupke Chupke turned out to be very enjoyable to shoot. Almost the entire cast was like family. All of us had worked together before. I must tell you, Amitabh and Jaya did relatively small parts in Chupke Chupke only for me, and I am thankful.”
Chupke Chupke also had the two male singing stalwarts Mohammed Rafi and Kishore Kumar coming together for a rare jugalbandi ‘Sa re ga ma’. Only the mighty Sachin Dev Burman could pull off this feat.
