The Hollywood blockbuster Avatar’s (2009) connection with Bollywood refuses to go away. Exactly 6 years ago, Govinda went viral when he claimed that he was the original choice for the role of the protagonist. And now, actor-comedian Rajiv Thakur has made a sensational claim that the story of Avatar seems to be copied from Anil Kapoor-Poonam Dhillon starrer Kasam (1988).

Rajiv Thakur makes a SENSATIONAL claim: "If you watch Anil Kapoor's Kasam, you'll feel that the makers of Avatar COPIED its story"

Rajiv Thakur said on Chalchitra Talks, “It is often alleged that Hindi filmmakers copy from Hollywood. But if you watch Kasam, you’ll feel that the makers of Avatar copied its story.”

The host, Vaibhav Munjal, asked if Rajiv was talking about Avatar, which was directed by James Cameron. Rajiv Thakur replied, “Yes, James Cameron’s Avatar. It’s a big statement that I am making. However, if you hear Kasam’s story, you’ll also believe that it has the same story as Avatar.”

Rajiv Thakur then began narrating Kasam’s plot, “The film is about police officers, and Anil Kapoor is also a part of this group. Meanwhile, another group is of dacoits, who reside in a village. Pran is their leader and her daughter is Poonam Dhillon. The cops ask Anil Kapoor to assume the identity of a dacoit and infiltrate the gang. He does as instructed and succeeds. He falls in love with Poonam Dhillon. Both convince every dacoit in the village to surrender.”

Rajiv continued, “But there’s a corrupt person in the police force who wants to eliminate all the dacoits. He decides to attack the village. Anil Kapoor stops them from doing so and assures that he’ll get the dacoits to surrender. But the corrupt cop is determined to attack and goes ahead. Anil Kapoor, who’s a cop, decides to fight on the side of the dacoits.”

Avatar, meanwhile, tells the story of Jake Sully, a former Marine who operates a genetically engineered Na’vi-human hybrid body to help the Resources Development Administration (RDA) extract the valuable mineral unobtanium from Pandora. However, Jake falls in love with Neytiri, the daughter of the Na’vi clan’s leaders. When Colonel Miles Quaritch launches an attack on the clan, Jake switches sides and fights alongside the Na’vi.
