At a recent press conference ahead of the highly anticipated third season of Daredevil: Born Again, stars Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio gave fans an intriguing look into the evolving relationship between Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin. The two actors, who have shared a limited yet electrifying number of scenes over the past decade, teased a fresh dynamic between their characters—one that is as intense as ever but also uniquely different this time around.
D’Onofrio, known for his chilling portrayal of Kingpin, described the internal struggles both Murdock and Fisk face, likening their journeys to that of vampires trying to exist in daylight. “Although we’re trying to live in the daylight, the two of us. We have that in common. We’re broken men. If you can think about the metaphor of vampires trying to live in the daylight, it’s a struggle that they’re going through,” he explained.
This metaphor not only reinforces the darkness that both characters wrestle with but also underscores their attempts to reconcile their pasts with the lives they are striving to build. Despite their deeply ingrained opposition, there’s an unspoken understanding between them—an acknowledgment of their shared burdens.
One of the defining aspects of Daredevil’s storytelling has been its careful restraint when it comes to Murdock and Fisk’s direct confrontations. Over the years, their meetings have been sparse yet unforgettable, a fact that D’Onofrio emphasized during the discussion, “He’s got his thing and I’ve got my plan, you can’t put us together in the same scene a lot because it’s not as powerful if you do that,” he said. “How many scenes do you think we’ve done over the last 10 years? Probably like five or six only. But it’s so good when you do. It’s good for us as the actors, you know, because we just like doing scenes together. But it’s great for the story because it always means something. It’s always either at the beginning of something or the end of something. Or both sometimes, you know? So, it’s intense. And that’s what it’s like now.”
This measured approach to their interactions ensures that each moment they share on screen carries weight—setting the stage for either a major turning point or a dramatic climax. For Cox, this season presents a unique opportunity to shift the paradigm of Murdock and Fisk’s interactions. One of the most exciting changes? Bringing them together earlier in the season rather than holding off until a later climactic moment. “It is something that we haven’t done before, and huge credit to Dario and the producers who came up with this idea, whoever it was. But bringing us together early on in this new season is something we haven’t done before,” Cox revealed.
This earlier encounter adds a new layer of tension and unpredictability, as both characters must navigate a delicate balance of power. Cox further elaborated on the challenges this presents, “Putting him in a position where they are having to trust one another’s ability to stay true to who they say they are. And it just lends itself to a slightly different dynamic for a scene.” The concept of trust—however fleeting or precarious—between two mortal enemies is bound to create gripping drama. How much can either of them believe the other’s words? And what happens when that trust inevitably crumbles? One thing remains certain: when Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk share the screen, it’s never just a meeting—it’s an event.
