Surabhi Das is on a roll. After wowing the audience with her titular role in the TV show ‘Nima Denzongpa’ and her Bengali film, Dada Tumi Dusto Bor (2022), she’s all set to make her OTT debut with the upcoming Prime Video series Carnaame: Badla Gear Patli Kismat. And that’s not all. She has bagged one of the most-awaited films of Indian Cinema, Ramayana. Surabhi plays the role of Urmila in the Ranbir Kapoor-starrer. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Surabhi Das spoke about Carnaame, Ramayana and a lot more.

What can we expect from you in Carnaame: Badla Gear Patli Kismat?
I play a character called Geetika. It’s the story of four guys, and I play the girlfriend of one of them. Geetika is a very strong girl; no one can take advantage of her. She knows how to take a stand for herself. If needed, she can even get into physical fights. That’s how strong she is. She also takes a stand for other people. I loved playing her, and you can definitely expect to see a different shade of me in the show.
Director Vinay Waikul has worked in several memorable films like Dangal (2016), 3 Idiots (2009), Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013) etc. He also directed web shows like The Aryanyak, The Broken News etc. How was it working with him?
He is very calm. Scene ko bahut hi pyaar se samjhate hai. If he wants you to perform differently, he’ll approach you and be like ‘Aisa hum karke dekh sakte hai’ and ‘Thoda aisa try karte hai’. I have not shot for many days, but whenever I was on the sets, I did not see him losing his temper at all. Hence, it was a pleasure working with him.
Vinay assisted in Dangal, directed by Nitesh Tiwari, who has now directed you in Ramayana. The ‘Rama’ glimpse was unveiled yesterday and it’s a big talking point. How excited are you?
I am very excited. I am grateful that I got a chance to play even a small character in such a huge film. The ‘Rama’ glimpse is out, and more such assets will be unveiled in the days to come, which will give viewers a better idea of the film. I am sure everyone will love it.
What did you observe about Ranbir Kapoor on the sets?
He’s very introverted, calm and silent. Rama’s character is quite graceful. If you are like that in real life, it becomes effortless to slip into the part. He does his scene with complete dedication. I never saw him come out of his character when the cameras were not rolling. He remained in his character. When he comes on the set, he has this energy about him. Aap naa chahte hue bhi aap dekhoge hi unke taraf! He’s so good-looking and his aura is such that you feel that aapke saamne bhagwan khade hai.
I believe you have scenes with Ravie Dubey and Sai Pallavi as well. How was it working with them?
I play Sai Pallavi’s sister. She is the sweetest person. I was curious about the South industry and I asked her how things are out there. She explained nicely to me. Also, our outfits, especially our lehengas, were very heavy. Moreover, we were also wearing jewellery. So, it was difficult to manage. She guided me well and suggested ki ‘aap aise step le sakte ho’.
The same goes for Ravie Dubey. We didn’t speak much, but since we shot scenes together, we did touch upon the shows that he’s producing, his characters etc. He’s also a very down-to-earth person.

Nitesh Tiwari is always seen as calm and composed. Does he ever get angry on the sets?
Never. Forget shouting, maine unki zor se awaaz bhi nahin suni. He’s such a cool-headed director. He would come and lovingly explain the scenes to us. He would always have a smile on his face. I was so glad that I got a chance to work with someone like him, who has made some big films. It happens sometimes that big directors may speak rudely with actors playing minor parts. But he is not like that at all. In fact, everyone on the set was similarly calm. Hence, we worked in a good, positive environment.
How did life change after ‘Nima Denzongpa’ for you? What feedback did you get, especially the depiction of prejudices faced by people from Northeast India in other parts of the country?
I was a girl working in Assam. Then I came to Mumbai and got to play the lead on a Colors TV show. As a result, life completely changed, financially and workwise. Whoever watched the show has loved it. We wrapped the show 4 years ago, in 2022. And yet, even today, I am addressed as Nima.
I can’t say that prejudices no longer exist or that people have fully realised their wrongdoings. We recently saw such an incident in Delhi, where a couple hurled racist slurs at their Northeastern neighbours. I hope strict action is taken against them. Sadly, incidents like these may continue to happen. The situation can improve if the authorities begin dealing with such cases with an iron hand. At the same time, because of social media, people from other parts of India have come to understand how beautiful our region is, how modern our mindset is, and how we treat women. I am pleasantly surprised when friends and followers tell me that they look up to people from the Northeast.
I saw your ‘Humans Of Bombay’ video and the way you have progressed in life is commendable. How does your mother and brother react to your success?
Thank you so much. It really means a lot. My mother and brother are extremely happy. My mother can’t stop thanking God (smiles). I never have to hesitate while accepting any role as I know that my family is going to support me, no matter what. They do not care what society says. They are very happy to know that I am doing well in life. That, in turn, makes me happy.
What next?
I have recently wrapped up a Hindi film, in which I play the lead. It’s based on the 1971 war. It is expected to be released by the end of the year. I play a strong character with a lot of layers. I have also done action. As an actor, I am completely satisfied to essay a role of this kind. I cannot wait for everyone to watch this film.
