Two weeks after Bhooth Bangla, it’s time for a big film to arrive in theatres – Raja Shivaji. Releasing primarily in Marathi with Hindi version added as well, the film is produced and directed by Riteish Deshmukh, who is also playing the part of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Though there have been several films made on the legendary historical figure, Raja Shivaji is the biggest cinematic experience and it’s good to see Riteish backing it up after being in the industry for almost quarter of a century.
Backed by Jio Studios, the film is a huge ensemble affair too with several Bollywood stars in it, ranging from Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bachchan and Fardeen Khan to Vidya Balan and Bhagyashree. While Genelia Deshmukh is the leading lady, the film also stars Mahesh Manjrekar, Sachin Khedekar and Amol Gupte who have Marathi origin. Made for theatrical experience, the film is indeed big, as can be seen from the trailer.
No wonder, it has caught attention of the Marathi audience in particular and this is where it will score the biggest as well. The film has already seen the best advance booking ever for a Marathi film and will cross 1 lakh mark before the first show commences. That would ensure a very comfortable double digit start for the film with potential to get into that Rs. 12-14 crores range. Moreover, there would be collections from the Hindi version as well to the tune of Rs. 2 crores, which means the film is looking at a superb all-India start of Rs. 14-15 crores.
Meanwhile, there is Junaid Khan and Sai Pallavi starrer Ek Din also arriving this Friday. The film experimented with the strategy of advance booking opening weeks in advance but there has hardly been any movement. It would be a challenge for the opening day to touch Rs. 1 crore mark and it would eventually all boil down to word of mouth.
