Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has opened up about his evolving approach towards casting actors repeatedly in his films. Known for giving unique roles to different stars over the years, the director admitted that he once consciously avoided working with the same actor twice in a row. However, that mindset changed during the making of Tamasha, when he reunited with both Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone after previously collaborating with them on Rockstar and Love Aaj Kal respectively.

Now, Imtiaz Ali is once again teaming up with Diljit Dosanjh for his upcoming theatrical release Main Vaapas Aaunga, following the massive appreciation they received for Amar Singh Chamkila. Speaking to Hindustan Times, the filmmaker reflected on his earlier belief about not revisiting actors for consecutive projects. “Initially, I used to think I should never go back and work with the same actor again. Thought I would have a hangover from the previous film,” he said.

Imtiaz further explained that his casting process has always been driven by the demands of the script rather than any fixed rule. “I always write first and then see which actor suits this part. With Diljit, I realised he is the most suited for this part. Why should I have the notion of not working with the same actor back-to-back if he is the best actor for this film?”

The director also pointed out how actors can portray vastly different personalities despite repeated collaborations. Comparing Diljit’s new role with his previous performance in Amar Singh Chamkila, Imtiaz added, “With Ranbir, it was a different guy. Here too, Nirvair is a completely different person from Amar Singh Chamkila. This role wouldn’t be possible in this way if he weren’t playing it.”

Main Vaapas Aaunga has already generated considerable buzz among moviegoers. The film stars Diljit Dosanjh alongside veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah, Vedang Raina, and Sharvari. Described as a story of love and longing, the film is slated to release in cinemas on June 12, 2026.

The project also reunites the celebrated musical trio of Imtiaz Ali, A. R. Rahman, and Irshad Kamil, raising expectations for another soulful soundtrack from the filmmaker’s camp.
