Hansal Mehta on the current political environment for storytelling, “I feel impeded and encouraged, adversity brings out the best in individuals”

Hansal, freedom of expression has always been a pressing issue for you. Do you think stand-up comedians need to rein themselves in?
A lot has been said, vandalized, and numerous trolls have emerged from the dead. You will find my detailed thoughts in various posts. Anything additional I say gets twisted and falls victim to #whataboutery and #wherewereyouwhen. May our freedom as human beings prevail. May better sense, civility, and dignity prevail.

As a filmmaker, you have faced numerous censorship hurdles. Are you in favor of banning censorship?
I am fundamentally opposed to censorship—vehemently so.

Which of your films has been the most challenging to release, and why?
Omertà, undoubtedly. Not because of censorship issues, but due to its producer, who was extremely troublesome and had a disturbing proclivity for harassment. I wouldn’t wish him upon my worst enemy.

What is the progress on your Mahatma Gandhi series being produced by Applause Entertainment? Are you satisfied with how it’s shaping up, and when does it start streaming?
I am immensely proud of what we’ve achieved. The credit goes to Sameer Nair for being a stellar collaborator and creating an exemplary content studio. Here is someone who backs a creator’s vision with genuine passion for storytelling. We are currently in the final stages of post-production. More details will follow once we are ready to stream.

You are among the most fearless filmmakers in this country. Do you feel impeded by the current political environment?
Both impeded and encouraged. I believe adversity brings out the best in individuals who possess the heart of a rebel and the soul of an artist. I’d like to think I am a bit of both. Honestly, there has never been a better time to tell stories. The audience has grown, and the avenues to showcase one’s work have multiplied significantly.

Are you working on a film with Saif Ali Khan? What’s next?
All in good time. Saif and I are collaborating on adapting a book and hope to work together once we have a script we both like and financial arrangements are finalized. I’m currently involved in multiple projects as both producer and director. Exciting times lie ahead! More on this another day!
