During the making of Abhay, which completes 23 years this week, Kamal Haasan recalls a terrifying incident, a near-fatal fall suffered by his then-wife, Sarika. Sharing the traumatic memory, Kamal says, “That was an entirely separate trauma. It was so frightening. Just a few days before my wife’s accident, I was discussing the intricacies of a steep fall with my FX expert from Hollywood. He had done the stunts in Cliffhanger. He wanted my fall from twenty-five storeys to look physically believable. I finished this fall only to plunge into a far bigger one.”

Reflecting on the night of the accident, Kamal narrates, “On that fateful night, I reached home and told my daughter Shruti that all the dangerous stunts in Abhay were over. Then it happened. My wife is another Abhay. Courageously, she underwent medication, surgery, and therapy. But this was my wife. I’m sure if my mother or sister had fallen on the terrace I’d have been traumatized. I’m a ladies’ man. I’ve grown up being surrounded with women.”
Was he subconsciously recording the emotional and physical turmoil for future reference as an actor?
“That’s quite a common trait among actors,” he admits. “You can’t be ashamed of this. If you are, you become a schizophrenic. Though I can detach myself from a tragedy, no one is immune to tears and fears. Being an actor, I’ve recorded a number of tragedies for reference. But this was one crisis where I kept the actor completely at bay. Of course, there’s that child within me that remained curious about the fall and wanted to know the technical details. That didn’t diminish my affection for my wife. But the truth is, I was undergoing a bizarre screenplay in my mind. I went from shock to gloom within no time.”
