Actor-writer Adivi Sesh has drawn attention with the teaser of his upcoming film Dacoit, particularly for its use of the iconic 90s song ‘Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast’. The instantly recognisable background score from the cult film Mohrra has sparked nostalgia among audiences, and Sesh has now revealed the personal reason behind its inclusion.

For Adivi Sesh, the song goes beyond being a popular chartbuster of the 1990s. He has shared that ‘Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast’ was one of his favourite tracks growing up and holds a special place in his memories. The song was part of the very first dance performance he ever did on stage during his school days. At a school event, Sesh performed a medley of songs, with this track standing out as a defining moment that marked his first experience performing in front of a live audience.
While conceptualising the teaser of Dacoit, Sesh was clear about wanting to evoke that sense of nostalgia. He consciously decided to acquire the rights to the song and use it in the film, ensuring that the homage was done in a legitimate and respectful manner. The intention, according to him, was not to rely on familiarity as a gimmick, but to integrate a memory that has stayed with him since childhood.
Speaking about the emotional significance behind the decision, Adivi Sesh said, “Some songs stay with you forever, and ‘Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast’ is one of those songs for me. Growing up in the 90s, this track was everywhere, and I absolutely loved it. It was actually part of the first dance performance I ever did on a school stage, in a medley of songs, and that moment is still very vivid in my memory.”
“When we were working on the film, I felt an instinctive pull to bring this song in – not as a gimmick, but as a feeling. Using it as one the songs in the film was my way of tipping my hat to that younger version of myself who fell in love with music, performance, and the joy of entertaining people. We made sure to acquire the rights properly because it mattered to me that this homage was done the right way. It’s a small, personal memory woven into a much larger film, and I hope audiences feel that sense of nostalgia and energy when they hear it.”, he added.
The teaser’s musical choice has already triggered discussion online, with many viewers recognising the familiar tune and its 90s connect. The inclusion adds another layer to the teaser without revealing key plot details.
Dacoit follows the story of an angry convict seeking revenge against his former girlfriend who betrayed him. Written and directed by Shaneil Deo, the film stars Mrunal Thakur as the female lead, with Anurag Kashyap playing a key role. The film is scheduled for release on March 19, 2026, alongside Dhurandhar 2 and Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown Ups.
