Legendary Bollywood star Vinod Khanna lost his life to bladder cancer in 2017 at the age of 70. But new revelations from his second wife, Kavita Khanna, show the actor’s struggle with cancer began much earlier, with a lung cancer diagnosis in 2001.

In a candid video on her YouTube channel, Kavita shared that during an annual check-up, doctors found patches in Vinod’s lungs, and he was diagnosed with lung cancer. At that time, he was a heavy smoker, reportedly consuming between 40 to 80 cigarettes a day. Facing the frightening news, the couple sought guidance from spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, whom they affectionately called “Gurudev.” Instead of immediately opting for surgery, they were advised to explore breathwork and meditation, and Vinod spent time practising sudarshan kriya at an ashram in Rishikesh.
Recalling the uncertainty of that period, Kavita said, “It was 2001 when Vinod had a diagnosis of lung cancer. We went to the leading MRI specialists of Mumbai, and they all said it was lung cancer.” To the doctors’ astonishment, follow-up scans showed no trace of the disease after his time at the ashram and subsequent treatment abroad, a recovery the family described as remarkable.
However, a new challenge emerged in 2010 when Vinod was diagnosed with bladder cancer, which eventually led to his passing in 2017 despite treatment efforts. According to Kavita, doctors had initially given him a grim prognosis, with only a 25% chance of surviving two years if all conventional treatments were pursued aggressively.
