In an interaction with Raj Shamani, Janhvi Kapoor offered a deeply personal glimpse into the emotional aftermath of losing her mother, speaking about trauma, guilt, and the difficult journey toward healing.

Reflecting on that phase of her life, the actor admitted, “I felt helpless for years,” describing how the loss left her grappling with confusion and emotional instability. She revealed that her mindset at the time led her to internalise the tragedy in a troubling way. “I almost felt like I deserved it, like it was some kind of cosmic balancing,” she said, explaining how she believed that because she had received so much in life, such a loss was inevitable.
However, she was quick to acknowledge how problematic that thinking was. “That’s messed up, no one deserves that,” she added, noting that she now regrets framing her mother’s death in such a self-centred way. “It’s not about me. She was her own person, it wasn’t just about being my mother.”
Janhvi also spoke about how her emotional state and trusting nature made her vulnerable during that time. “I was very naive. I used to believe, why would anyone want to do anything negative?” she admitted, hinting that this outlook sometimes led to people taking advantage of her, both personally and professionally.
Over the years, she says she has consciously worked on healing and shifting her perspective. “What’s changed is my outlook, I’m looking at the good so much more now,” she shared. She added that love, therapy, and a growing sense of purpose have helped her move forward. “I don’t feel that helpless anymore.”
Janhvi described herself as more self-aware and emotionally grounded now, someone who is still evolving but no longer defined by that period of pain.
