Actor Madhuri Dixit has come out strongly in support of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan amid recurring social media criticism surrounding the latter’s appearance at the Cannes Film Festival. Speaking about the issue, Madhuri emphasized that Aishwarya’s contribution to Indian cinema and her global achievements should not be overshadowed by conversations focused solely on her looks, age, or body type.
During a conversation with PTI while promoting her upcoming Netflix film Maa Behen, Madhuri Dixit addressed the criticism directed at Aishwarya and stressed that her identity extends far beyond physical appearance.
“She has been going there (Cannes Film Festival) for 20 years. She has done the whole country proud. She is a global star. As a Miss World, she has done so much for the country. You cannot reduce her to a number on a scale, or a number on the dress, or the size or a number on the calendar years. You cannot reduce her to that. She is beautiful. She looks beautiful, and she is beautiful inside,” Madhuri stated.
The actor also expressed concern over the larger impact of such comments, particularly on younger audiences who consume social media content every day.
“I think people have to realise that when you do these kinds of comments, what kind of message are you sending to the youngsters today? That your worth is based on how you look, not on your achievements. I think this is a completely wrong message being sent. Even earlier, there were people like that. But those who commented didn’t have a means to comment (back then). But today, they have the means,” she added.
Aishwarya Rai has been a familiar face at the Cannes Film Festival for more than two decades. Since making her debut at the prestigious event in 2002 while representing Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas, she has become one of the most recognized Indian personalities on the international stage. Every year, her appearance on the red carpet generates significant attention from global media outlets and fans alike.
However, despite her stature and accomplishments, Aishwarya has often found herself at the receiving end of online criticism, with some social media users making age-related and body-shaming remarks. While the actor has largely chosen not to respond to such comments publicly, several members of the film industry have spoken in her support over the years.
