Actor Shraddha Das recently opened up about her journey in films, the kind of roles that inspire her, and the differences she has experienced while working in the South Indian film industry and Bollywood. For Shraddha, the driving force behind choosing a role is always the depth and complexity of the character. “A layered character excites me,” she said, adding that this instinct continues to guide her choices as an actor.

What Drew Shraddha Das to Her Latest OTT Role

Talking about her latest OTT project, Shraddha shared that the biggest reasons she agreed to the role were the filmmaker and the story itself. “The first reason was the director — someone whose work I’ve admired for a long time. The script and my character both had great depth and a complete arc. Also, working alongside Konkona Sen Sharma, who leads the series, made it impossible to say no,” she explained.

Shraddha Das on Valuing Substance Over Screen Time

Having steadily built her career across multiple languages and platforms, Shraddha emphasized that she values substance over screen time. “A series always has multiple storylines, and being the lead in one of them was exciting. I started by doing smaller roles in different languages and worked my way up. Now, playing important parts in OTT shows feels rewarding,” she said. Shraddha added that her journey has been self-made, without any industry connections or big launches. “I’ve done this without a film background. I’m realistic about where I come from and proud of the journey that chose me,” she said.

From Aspiring Singer to Actor

Interestingly, acting wasn’t part of Shraddha’s original plan. “I wanted to be a singer. I was even working on a music album when someone saw my photo and offered me an acting role. That film didn’t happen because the person passed away, but later, I trained under NSD artists and kept auditioning — I must’ve given around 500 auditions,” she recalled.

Her first major Hindi film was Lahore, which took four years to complete. During that time, she signed around 13 to 15 regional films. “My Telugu film with Gopichand made me instantly popular, and since then, I’ve never been out of work — whether in Hindi or regional cinema,” she said. Shraddha, who was last seen in Naina Murder Case, also spoke about the warmth of regional audiences. “In the South, people love you no matter how small or big your role is. That love is unconditional,” she shared.

“South Doesn’t Use Paid PR”

Highlighting the differences between the two industries, Shraddha noted how the South film industry focuses more on work and less on publicity. “The first big difference is PR. In the South, there’s no paid PR. Once you sign a film, everyone knows, and things move quickly. I’ve even signed films over phone calls without meeting anyone. You shoot, edit, and release within months,” she said.

In contrast, she explained, the Hindi film industry moves at a slower pace and requires artists to remain visible through PR and media appearances. “What I love about the South is how deeply audiences connect with their stars. Even if a girl does just one or two films, people remember her. They’ll travel miles to watch your movie — that kind of loyalty is rare,” she added.

On Audience Awareness and Changing Times

Shraddha concluded by sharing her thoughts on the growing awareness among audiences across regions. “People have always been sensitive; the only difference is that now they have platforms to express it. Earlier, only a few critics reviewed films, but now everyone can share their opinions online. The visibility has changed, not the sentiment,” she said.

With her grounded outlook and strong body of work across industries, Shraddha Das continues to carve her own space in both regional cinema and Bollywood, guided by her passion for layered and meaningful roles.
