A World Apart from Shoestring Productions

Devaiah, accustomed to the fast-paced environment of low-budget productions, found Bhansali’s meticulous approach a stark contrast. Elaborate sets worth crores of rupees, coupled with hours spent perfecting intricate lighting, created a unique work atmosphere.

In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, Gulshan stated, “The first set that I stepped into was worth Rs 5-7 crore. Lavish sets, beautiful costumes, and then you’re waiting and waiting for hours and hours. Mr Bhansali takes his time; that’s his preferred way of working, and you have to be okay with that. And it’s important to adapt.”

Adaptation and Observation

Devaiah highlights the importance of adapting to SLB’s specific work style. He described spending hours in full costume, observing the meticulous filmmaking process. He further mentioned that while a pierced ear was initially envisioned for his character, he opted for clip-on earrings instead, which weren’t without their drawbacks.

“It’s a very time-consuming process. Sometimes, his lighting takes over six hours to set up. You realise in the first couple of days that this is how it’s going to be. If you want a fast-paced environment, then you shouldn’t be working with Bhansali,” Devaiah explained.

Having said that, it is worth mentioning here that earlier Devaiah had elaborated on the learning experience of simply observing Bhansali’s work style. During an interview with Bollywood Hungama Gulshan had said, “Sometimes, I would be in hair and costume for three days, and not be given a single shot. I would go and sit on the set, you understand his sensibility, how he works, what he likes and doesn’t like by just sitting there and observing things.”

Coming to the professional front, Gulshan is currently busy promoting his web show, Bad Cop, which also stars Anurag Kashyap. The series is streaming on Disney+ Hostar.
